James A. Lanier (Spoon), 84, of Tucson, AZ, died peacefully, March 23, 2001 at the Veteran’s Memorial (Hospice) Hospital located in Tucson, AZ. He was born February 5, 1917 in Tarboro, North Carolina, the fourth child of Charlie and Elizabeth Lanier. James attended Saint Mary’s Catholic School until joining the military. In 1942 James joined the United States Army and was on active duty in World War II. He later joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in 1948 at the time segregation ended in the Armed Forces.
His tour duties included service in the Korean and Vietnam War.
Sargent James A. Lanier was a loyal soldier that safeguarded our country during time of war. He firmly believed that ”If he could help somebody then his living would not be in vain.” His motto was, ”Everyone can make a positive difference in the world.” James had a nickname that his friends lovingly called him (Spoon). He worked at Montgomery Ward until his second retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Lue in 1991.
