He was born in Eaton, W.Va., on June 3, 1933, a son of the late Harry J. and Ruth Khoenlein Horner.
"Newt" was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of American Legion Post 15 and the V.F.W. He retired from the Parkersburg News and Sentinel after 44 years with the paper.
Surviving "Newt" are daughter, Lora Rose Stringer and Larry of Parkersburg; sons, James Horner and Ruth of Mineral Wells, Loury Horner Jr. of Parkersburg and Lee William Horner and Donna of Kentucky; stepdaughter, Melinda M. Whealdon and Jim of Ohio; stepsons, Daniel Scott Metz and Dorothy of Parkersburg and Samuel Ray Metz of Ohio; grandchildren, Michael Carpenter, James Carpenter, Evelyn Carpenter, Andrew Horner and Rebecca, Megan Horner, Kasaundra Glendenning, Heather Horner and Jessica Hoover; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Ruth "Ninnie" Byrd.
In addition to his parents, "Newt" was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Hutchins Horner; stepdaughter, Cynthia Spencer; six sisters and three brothers.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Burial will be at Walker Cemetery with full military rites by American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday and for one hour prior to the service on Monday.
