Excerpts from obituary in Missouri Valley Times 1-14-1937:
"MRS. W.A. SMITH
"Emma Lunette Hoag was born May 15, 1848, near Norwich, N. Y., the daughter of Altana Barber and William Hoag, and died at her home Jan. 8, 1937, at the age of 88 years, seven months and 25 days. She was of colonial ancestry.
"She was a descendant of Seth Pope, lieutenant in the Massachusettes militia in 1689 and 1690, and of Elnathan Terry, soldier of the American revolution in 1777. She was entitled to membership in the Daughters of the Revolution and the Colonial Dames. [NOTE: IT HAS SINCE BEEN DISCOVERED THAT EMMA WAS A MAYFLOWER DESCENDANT THROUGH HER MOTHER.]
"Her family came to Little Sioux, Ia., in pre-railroad days as pioneer residents. She married W. A. Smith and made this community her home the remainder of her life. She played a leading part in community activities and her husband was one of its foremost citizens.
With the assistance of her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Coulthard, she led in the organization of the California Junction Presbyterian church and the erection of the edifice in 1907. She had a small east room for prayer meeting and social purposes built in honor of her young people's Bible class. She was an active member of the Eastern Star lodge at Modale.
"She is survived by a son, William E. Smith of Pueblo, Colo., a daughter, Mrs. N.W. Irwin of Chicago, and four grandsons. Her daughter, Mrs. H. R. Coulthard, died several years ago leaving her children Robert Ross and Ivan of California, Mrs. Verna Welch of Logan, Mrs. Leslie Utman, California, Mrs. Eugene Vincent, Omaha, and Mrs. Russell Reddicks, Loveland.
"Funeral services were held Sunday at the California church with Rev. Harry Hostetler, former pastor and now retired, officiating, assisted by Rev. A. L. Wendelburg. Burial was in St. Johns cemetery near Old Town.
