North Side Widow Beaten Fatally
Officers Ponder Robbery Motive
Brutally beaten about the head, a 69-year old widow died today after having been found unconscious this morning in her in her North Side home.
Mrs. Blanche E. Boggs, who lived alone at 807 E Euclid, died at Sacred Heart hospital as 12:30 p.m..
Detectives John Sullivan and E. T. Connelly said Mrs. Boggs' skull had been fractured. They reported a doctor told them Mrs. Boggs had one wound above her left eye which could have been inflicted by a round weapon such as a hammer, wrench or gun butt. Mrs. Boggs' jaw also was fractured, the detectives were told.
Police reported there was much blood on the bed on which Mrs. Boggs had been lying, but no evidence of a struggle.
Purse Found Open
Police Inspector Robert Piper said Mrs. Boggs' purse was found open. He said both the purse and a billfold were empty.
The house apparently was entered through an unlocked window, police reported. Piper said Mrs. Boggs' assailant apparently left the place through the back door.
An extensive search of the neighborhood was made by police for the weapon used in the assault, but none was found.
Detective Capt. O. K. Sherar asked neighborhood residents to look closely for any weapon which might have been thrown away and might be bloody.
He said the case now appeared to be one where a night prowler went into Mrs. Boggs' home, probably with the motive of robbery.
Sullivan and Connelly said in a report they talked at the hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Stanton, 2303 N Sycamore. Stanton, they said, was Mrs. Boggs' grandson.
Stanton told detectives he tried to call Mrs. Boggs shortly after 6 a.m. but got no answer.
Mrs. James Cribby, 3920 N Locust, Mrs. Boggs' sister, told the detectives she called Mrs. Boggs' home at 6:30 a.m. and again a short time later and got no answer.
She told Connelly and Sullivan sh went to her sister's home and the first thing she noticed when she went up on the front porch was an open window.
Mrs. Cribby said the front door was locked so she crawled through the open window and found her sister in the bloody bed.
Connelly and Sullivan said they were told Mrs. Boggs received and old-age pension and had little money and apparently no enemies. They said she had been a widow for 13 years and had lived at her present address for the last four years.
The killer confessed to this murder and to other murders. He died in a Minnesota prison in April 2003.
