Mrs. Ella B. Angell Gates, widow of Edward M. Gates, died at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon at her residence, 160 Ten Eyck street, following a year's illness aged 77 years. Mrs. Gates had been in failing health during the past year but she had been confined to her home only during the past three months.

She was born Nov. 7, 1842, at Clayton, N.Y., only daughter of Truman S. and Eliza Babcock Angell. She came to this city from Clayton with her parents when eight years of age and had since resided here. She had made her home at 160 Ten Eyck street during the past 50 years. Her father was a well-known grocer having conducted a grocery business on the Angell block, Court street, for many years under the firm name of Truman S. Angell & Son.

She was married to Edward M Gates Oct. 16, 1865, in this city. Mr. Gates was for years one of Watertown's most influential and honored citizens. He passed away May 1, 1910. He provided entertainments as a young man in Washington hall securing road shows to stop over and furnish amusement.

Mr. Gates later entered upon the construction of the city opera house in company with C. R. and A. D. Remington. He was active member of the theatre until about two years before his death. The city opera house was remodeled this year and named the Avon theatre. The building was erected about 35 years ago.

Mr. Gates went to San Francisco in 1861 and opened a dry goods store. He was then 18 years of age and despite his youth he conducted the business with marked success for three years when he disposed of it and returned to Watertown. He married Miss Angell in 1865.

Mrs. Gates continued her husband's philanthropic interests after his death. She was a communicant of Trinity Episcopal church since coming to this city. Surviving is one niece, Miss Grace H. Angell of this city.

The funeral will be held at 2:30 Friday afternoon from the residence, 160 Ten Eyck street, Rev. Francis W. Eason, rector of Trinity church, officiating. Interment will be in the family plot in Brookside cemetery.

Judge Henry Purcell, Judge Pardon C. Williams, Charles H. Anthony, E. F. Martin, J. Cooper Stebbins and Silas L. George will act as bearers at the funeral. Of these judges, Purcell and Williams, S. L. George and E. P. Martin were bearers at Mr. Gates' funeral ten years ago.
