Roy Earl Coats was born in 1907 in Carbondale Township, Osage County, Kansas, to Lee Irving Coast and Irene Laura (Carrier) Coats.

Roy Coats' first wife was Elloree Kirby Gilbert Williams, who married him on December 4, 1933 in Bakersfield, California, Elloree's birth place.

Elloree's father was John William Gilbert, who had died in 1922 when she was only 8 years old. Her mother, Lillian Elloree Kirby, married step-father Fairfax Williams sometime between 1922 and 1930, and little Elloree used his last name as her own.

In 1935, Elloree and Roy Coats had a son in Kern County, probably Bakersfield, but just a few months later, Elloree died, Leaving Roy a young widower with a 4-month old baby. He very soon thereafter married Moselle Molinari in Reno, Nevada. They also had a child.

Roy's last wife was Murial Hannah Lilley Marshall, whom he married in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on October 1, 1950. They were married for many years and her loss was mourned by many. Her obituary appears at length on her memorial page.
