Samuel married Margaret Forest on 24 July 1859 in Defiance Co., OH. They had four children: Anita Margaret born in May 1860, Arthur M. born in 1861, and both Jonathan and Forrest Alonzo born in 1862, presumably twins. Samuel appears with his parents on the 1850 U.S. Federal census in Richland Twp., Defiance Co., OH. By the time of the 1860 U.S. Federal census in Napoleon, Henry Co., OH, Samuel is married with a two-month old baby, Anita. No photographs of Samuel have been found.

The 68th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Latty in Napoleon, Ohio October through December 1861 and mustered in for three years of service under the command of Colonel Samuel H. Steedman. Samuel mustered in as a private for a three-year service term on 5 Oct 1861 in Co. A. He was promoted to Full Sergeant on 1 Dec 1861. (Some of the military records have him incorrectly listed as Samuel G. Morse.) Samuel died at 29-years old of the small pox on 14 December 1863 while stationed in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

The Vicksburg, Mississippi National Military Park has two markers honoring the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 68th Regiment. A monument is located on Jackson Road, just east of Maj. Gen. John A. Logan's Statue. A marker designating the assault of 22 May 1863, is located on Old Jackson Road, west of the Illinois Memorial.

Although his gravesite location is unknown, one would expect it to be in Vicksburg National Cemetery, yet no proof has been found.
