James was the oldest of at least six children born to Pelatiah and Betsey (Carver) Libby.
He married Octavia Libby on Jan. 21, 1864. They had two daughters; Bertha who died young, and Ida. Octavia died in 1871. James remarried about six months later to Rosa Burnham, and had four additional children.
James relocated to Hartford before 1880, where he worked as a farmer and carpenter.
