Captain Armstrong was born in Summerville, South Carolina, on March 12, 1893. He entered the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, on July 3, 1911, and graduated and was commissioned Ensign on June 5, 1915. He advanced in grade to the rank of Lieutenant, for temporary service on October 1, 1917, during World War I. On October 14, 1940, he accepted an appointment as Lieutenant in the US Naval Reserve to rank from August 22, 1940, and subsequently advanced to the rank of Captain. He returned to the Navy Department in September 1944 and, following brief service in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, was ordered to report to the Twelfth Naval District and thence to Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Area, until October 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his services in that assignment.
He was released from active duty on March 13, 1946.
He married Eunice Taylor, daughter of Charles H. Taylor, the first publisher of the Boston Globe on November 27, 1917. They had two daughters, Mary Armstrong Amory, and Louise Armstrong. The Daniel and Louise Armstrong Award is still awarded to students of the Nursing School at Hampton University.
He died in New York, New York, on July 16, 1947.
