He served in Japan during WWII as a Ssgt 19 Prcht Maint Co 11 Abn Division. My mother told me he was a paratrooper during the war. On one jump, he broke his leg and was never allowed to jump again.

Elzy, as his name was pronounced, was killed in Japan in a Jeep wreck. He and his Japanese fiance were traveling with another couple. We don't know exactly what happened. He was buried in Japan after his death therefore we do not know for sure his exact date of death. He was later exhumed and he arrived by train in Savannah, GA. on November 7, 1948. He was met by his mother, his sister Dorothy and other members of the family. He was then re-interred at Little Flock Church Cemetery in Tattnall county.

My mother remembers this as it was her birthday. Her mother, Dorothy, was going to give her a birthday party for her 6th birthday, but had to cancel due to Elzy's arrival. My mother says the weather was so rainy and wet for his funeral at Little Flock that several people in attendance bogged down in the mud at a low spot in the road between Collins and Reidsville where water had crossed and was still standing.

As far as we know, there is not a single photograph of him in existence.
