Papa Louis was a Master carpenter, as was his father. He was a small built man, being about 5' 5" and built kind of stocky, but not heavy. He had dark hair and eyes, giving credance to his Native American Heritage. As the story goes, he was the illigitmate son of Sarah Lewis and a "Red-headed railroad man from Albany, Georgia". Sarah was said to be the illitimate daughter of Amanda Lewis, a full-blood Yamacraw and an Unknown man. Amanda was said to be living in the Red Hill Community in Wayne County, GA. where she raised Sara. This was told to us by his daughter (my grandmother) Dorothy Moody Henry. When Papa Lewis was a baby, his mother married Elza Payne "Dee" Moody. In 1903, Dee and Sara had a daughter, Sally Jane.
He was a heavy drinker in his younger days, but it never seemed to affect his providing for his family. He was basically a "weekend drunk", working all week and staying drunk on the weekends. His 1st wife, Willie Jo, divorced him sometime in the late 1930's - early 1940's. He continued to drink until he suffered a stroke in the late 1940's and quit drinking. He recovered quite well with the exception of having to use a cane and had trouble swallowing.
He later married Cora in the early 1950's. After Cora's death from pneumonia complicated by asthma, he married another woman, but none of the family knew her. It was said by his son that the woman married him only for a place to live and whatever she thought she would inherit when he died. Little did she know that he owned nothing! Even the house he lived in was in his son's name. After Papa Lewis died, his son ran the woman off.
