Jacob, with his wife Caroline and 2 children, came to this country in 1868. They emigrated from Langenthal, Switzerland [Canton of Bern] aboard the SS Atlanta.
Jacob was a watchmaker and a tailor in Langenthal, a trade that had been in his family for several decades. When he arrived in Marietta, Ohio he decided to see the town .... Anderson Jewelers was looking for help .... he accepted and the family stayed in Marietta. Eventually he set up his own jewelry store - J. W. Wittlig and Sons, Jewelers on Front Street.
Jacob was a pillar of his community, participating in many city government functions and an active member of the City Council. The oldest member of the Gutenburg Lodge and active in his church, St. Luke's Lutheran Church.

He and Caroline had 10 children:
