Freidrich was born in Langenthal, Switzerland and came to the United States with his parents - Jacob and Caroline Wittlig, in 1868.They settled in the town of Marietta, Ohio.
Freidrich attended Marietta College. He went on to become an Opthalmic Optician, studying in the United States and Europe.
He was an Optician for 15 years up until his death at the age of 37.
Freidrich is also credited with the Patent for the Improved Locking Device for Bicycle Steering Gear [Pat.# 432,920 July 22, 1890].
He was married to Helen Dyar

They had 2 sons:
Pvt. US Army Emil Dyar Wittlig: 1898-1974
Pvt US Army Karl Wilhelm Wittlig: 1900-1965
