Actor. He was an American actor who appeared mainly in silent films yet worked into the talkies of the early 1940s. Most of his films after 1932 were uncredited roles or bit parts, often in B-movie westerns. He is credited with at least 160 film roles. His most successful roles were in 1926 with the silent films "The Love Gamble," "The Volga Boatman," and "Old Loves and New." Born Arthur Gibbs into an extended theatrical family, he was the son of actress Phyllis Rankin and first husband Henry Gibbs, but was adopted as a young boy by his step-father Harry Davenport. Both of his maternal grandparents were stage actors. Through his mother's half-sister, he was the nephew of Academy-Award-winning actor, Lionel Barrymore. During World War I, he served in the United States Marine Corps. After receiving a medical discharge in 1918, he joined the British Army. During World War II, he rejoined the Marine Corps. One of his last film roles was a photographer in the 1942 film, "Remember the Day." Following an extended illness, he died of a cerebral hemorrhage. He married twice. With his second wife, Marian Mansfield, an actress, two sons were born. His son, Arthur Rankin, Jr., became a successful actor.
