Christian Lemke, a resident of Town Rockland, died 29 May at age 78 yrs. 3 mos. and 7 days. The deceased was born 22 February 1829 in Sarasnow, West Prussia, and came to America 04 March 1857. After staying for a while in New York he came to Wisconsin in 1858 and settled on a farm in Town Rockland. In 1862, during the Civil War, he enlisted in Company ‘D', 2nd Wisconsin Regiment and served 3 years, 8 months. He was in the following battles: Haymarket, Virginia, 28 August 1862; South Mountain, Virginia, 14 September 1862; Antietam,
Maryland, 17 September 1862; Fredericksburg, Virginia, 11 December 1862; Chancellorsville, Virginia, 05 May 1863; and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 01 July 1863. In that last battle, while he was reloading his weapon, his left hand was shattered by an enemy bullet. After binding up his wounds he looked for shelter and was provided with milk by an elderly couple. After his wound healed he went back into service with the 22nd Wisconsin Regiment with which he served until his discharge 18 November 1865. He then returned to a farm in Town Rockland. In 1867 he married the widow Louise Kuehn who died in 1871 after presenting him with 2 sons. He entered into a second marriage on 11 October 1873, with widow Friedericke Damm, with whom he had 2 sons and a daughter. One son from his first marriage and a daughter from his second marriage preceded him in death. Christ Lemke was always hale and hearty until falling ill with dropsy at Christmas time.
He is survived by his sorrowing widow and 3 sons, as well as 10 step-children and many grandchildren. The funeral was held last Saturday under the direction of Pastor W. Schlei at the Lutheran Cemetery of Rockland.
