Harry "Duke" Deal, 73, died Wednesday, Sept 23, 2009.
Duke was born on March 19, 1936, in River Falls to Harry and Phila Deal. He attended first through 12th grades in River Falls Public Schools.
Duke married Kathleen "Peggy" Leonard on Feb. 4, 1955.
Along with his wife, Duke owned and operated Pearson Florist in River Falls for over 40 years. He was the expert on funeral and table arrangement floral design as well as growing greenhouse crops. Duke grew greenhouse cut flower crops including snap dragons, carnations, chrysanthemums, callas, and feverfew over the years. He also grew poinsettias, finished off azaleas, and grew spring annuals including geraniums, vincas, dracaenas and bedding plants.
He continued to help out in the business after his daughter, Joni Toland, purchased it in 2003.
Duke was active in civic and charitable organizations including the Moose Lodge, Jaycees, the River Falls Street Commission, the Greenwood Cemetery Association and the River Falls Fire Department and served in the National Guard from 1954 through 1961.
He served as Governor of the Moose Lodge and both Assistant Chief and Chief during his time with the River Falls Fire Department.
Duke is survived by his children: Patti (Lynn) Nelson, Danny Deal, David (Pam) Deal, and Joni (Dan) Johnson-Toland; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul (Elaine) Deal; one sister, Maxine (Merle) Nielsen; and further survived by many extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; his parents; great-grandson, Elliot Deal; brother, Dave Deal; brother-in-law, Daryl "Sonny" Leonard; and a sister-in-law, Darlene Huppert.
Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at the United Methodist Church in River Falls with Rev. Janet Ellinger officiating.
Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
