James grew up in Sanford. After high school he joined the Navy where he served in World War II. He moved to Tampa after transferring to TECO where he remained and retired after 40 years. He was a volunteer with the TECO Manatee Viewing Center. James was a Gideon, a lay pastor, and worked tirelessly leading people into Christianity. He was a member of Manhattan Avenue United Methodist Church since 1954 where he led Bible studies and youth groups. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Esther; daughter, Rebecca; granddaughter, Amanda (Chris); great-granddaughters; Taylor, Allison, Amy; sister, Marion Aiken.
