Reynold Arthur "Andy" Anderson, 93, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2013 at his Overland Park, Kansas home surrounded by his family.
Reynold was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois and moved with his family to Rosemead, California in the 1920's. Reynold's love of agriculture and livestock began with calves he raised in his family's back yard. He and his mother later raised Tamarack show collies, capturing many championships.
He was drafted prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 and served in the Army Air Corps as a medical evacuation corpsman, accompanying wounded soldiers returning from the Pacific and Europe to their homes and military hospitals across the United States. After four years of military service, he met his wife, Thelma Willsey Anderson and began a devoted marriage that lasted over 66 years.
As a young couple, Reynold and Thelma built and operated a feed and hardware store in Whittier, California. In 1956, they moved to northern California and their farm in Acampo, where they spent 51 years creating family memories with their two children and grandchildren.
Reynold was employed at Diamond Walnut for 25 years, and upon retirement had the opportunity to follow his true love of farming. He was a lifelong learner, and enjoyed animals, building innumerable sheds, fences and renovating a hundred-year old house that was never quite "finished." Reynold and Thelma were active in the First United Methodist Church and for many years led a seniors group.
Reynold was preceded in death by his father, Arthur E. Anderson, his mother, Agnes Lindstrom Anderson and his sister, Lois Wray Urton. He is survived by wife Thelma, daughter, Judy Katterhenrich and husband David, son Craig Anderson and wife Deborah, grandchildren Matthew Anderson and wife Christie, Alan Anderson, Ashley Williamson, Erin Williamson and Lisa Williamson Simmermon and husband Taylor. He enjoyed his four great-grandchildren, Emily and Andrew Anderson, Mila Curtis and Harper Simmermon. His quiet sense of fairness and deep love for animals, the outdoors, and landscape painting were gifts he imparted to his entire family.
In 2006, Reynold and Thelma moved to Overland Park, Kansas. The family is deeply grateful to wonderful caregivers who became family members as they assisted Reynold during his final years in Kansas, and to the staff of Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care.
Committal will be held privately at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm Thursday, August 8, 2013 at First United Methodist Church, 200 West Oak Street, Lodi. Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home is honored to serve the Anderson Family.
