When Sam was a year old, he moved with his parents to the Black Hills of South Dakota in a covered wagon. In 1891, they moved to Boise, ID. He attended school in Caldwell, ID, and worked for the Dairyman's Cooperative Creamery for many years. On 8 June 1936, he married Nelle Griffin in South Bend, IL. They lived in Portland, OR, for 23 years before his death, where he was a retired security officer. He was a member of the Tamici Club of Portland, and a life member of the Elks Lodge No. 1448 of Caldwell, ID.
His daughter, Thelma, died young, but he was survived by his wife, Nelle; his brother, Isaac of Caldwell; his sisters, Mrs. Jasper Beeson of Middleton and Mrs. Ray Lonkey of Boise; and one nephew, George Judd of Meridian, ID.
