Missionary. A native of Ohio, Sturge graduated and received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1880. Shortly afterwards he signed up to become a Presbyterian missionary and was assigned with his wife to work at Petchaburi, Siam. During his time there he founded Siam's first hospital. Returning to San Francisco in 1886, he began working with the Japanese who settled on the Pacific coast. That same year he founded the first Japanese YMCA and during the remainder of his life, established fourteen Japanese Presbyterian Churches. In 1904 he received the Order of the Rising Sun from the Emperor of Japan for his work. Following his death, he was buried in Los Angeles while a cenotaph was placed in his honor in Colma.
