Obituary from Helena's Independent Record 08/09/2005:

Roy B. Arnold, Jr., formerly of Helena, passed away in Boise, Idaho, on Aug. 3.

Roy was a student at Hawthorne School and attended Helena High School. He was a member of the "boxcar" class of Helena High.

In 1948 he married Maxine Craven of Boise, and they had three children - Jeffrey, Gregory and Pamela. Maxine preceded Roy in death in 1970. Roy married again in 1972, to Vonda Cowan, who survives him.

Full military graveside services will be performed on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery at 3 p.m. Roy Burke Arnold, Jr.

Roy B. Arnold died August 5, 2005 of heart arrhythmia. Roy was born December 27, 1922 in Helena, Montana to parents Roy B. Arnold Sr. and Frankie Rae Ellen Denny.

Roy attended school in Helena until his father was transferred to Boise in 1937. Roy continued school in Boise until he graduated from Boise High School in 1940. He then attended Boise Junior College from 1940 to 1941 and the University of Washington until his service during World War II in 1943. He was an Army Corps Engineer, First Lieutenant assigned to the European Theater. During World War II, Roy was involved in Dachau Prison Camp liberation. Roy had reached the level of Captain by the time he was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned to the University of Washington and graduated in 1947 before returning to Boise.

In 1948 Roy married Maxine Crave, who died in 1970. He then married Vonda Campbell Cowan in 1972. Roy loved his job as an investment broker. Roy was a leader for Boise stockbrokers for 54 years!

During his life Roy was an active member of the community. He served for many years in various organizations. Through his dedicated service Roy was appointed to many leadership positions and received awards including executive board council for the Boy Scouts of America, assistant manager for the Boise Chamber of Commerce, president of the Boise Junior Chamber of commerce, secretary and vice president of the Idaho State Chamber, national director of the U. S. Junior Chamber, vice president of the Mountain View Council of the Boy Scouts of America, chairman of the Ada County Coliseum Committee, chairman of the Greater Boise Auditorium district, vice president of “Funday,” board of directors of the Boise Chamber, recipient of Boise’s Distinguished Service award, Idaho Statesman’s “Man of the Year” Distinguished Service award, president of the Boy Scouts of America Ore-Ida Council, secretary of the Merchant Bureau Association, Boise Ditch Safety committee president, president of Kamie Lakes Cabin Owners Association for more than 10 years, member of the Capital City Kiwanis and the Boise Rotary clubs, chairman of his high school class reunion, worked “Paint the Town” each year and was an annual volunteer at the Sun Valley Jazz Festival. After joining the Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints in 1996, Roy also served as executive secretary, chairman of the Boy Scout committee and High Priest quorum teacher for the Boise 2nd Ward.

Of special note: Roy was an Eagle Scout and later received the Silver Beaver award for adult leaders for his many years of service with the Boy Scouts of America. He was involved in establishing the Fairy Land Parade, which would later be renamed the Holiday Parade. He was also one of the original six foundling members and second president of the Crane Creek Country Club who drew the first golf course plans out on a tablecloth over lunch. He loved the many years he spent with “Dew Sweepers” golf group.

Roy is survived by his loving wife Vonda Arnold; his eight children, Pamela, Geoffrey, Gregory, Velita, Linnie, Ronda, Devin and Dana; siblings Donna Morgan and Kenneth Arnold; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Frankie Arnold and his brother Butch Arnold.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at the bogus Basin Road LDS Chapel, 3229 Bogus Basin Road, Boise. Friends may call to visit with the family on Tuesday, August 9 from 6 to 8 pm at the Relyea Funeral Chapel and from 12:00 pm to 12:45 pm at the Bogus Basin LDS Chapel on Wednesday prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery.
