He was the son of Johan/John Heikkinen (1878-1953) and Edla/Gustava nee Niska (1877-1945), who were both immigrants from Finland. The couple married on September 9, 1901 in Calumet. They had children Axel (1902-1954), Eino (1903-1913), Elis (1904-1913), John/Ernest (1905-1936), Edwin (1906-1913), Ellina/Elaine (1908-1990), Ida (1910-1932), Hulda/Helen (1911-1997), and Lydia/Mabel (1913-1927). Armas (1915-1970) and Florence (1919-1996) were born later. Eino's brothers Elis and Edwin were also killed at the Italian Hall. Brother Axel was trapped on the Italian Hall stairway and injured but survived.
