Claus married Verda Horne on October 21, 1945. They eventually moved to Elkhart, Indiana. Verda passed away in 1999. Claus married his second wife Dorothy Bennitt in 2001. She preceded him in death in 2010.
Claus served his country in the US Army from 1942 to 1945. He earned the rank of Sergeant, and also received Ranger training, after which he served in the South Pacific.
Claus was employed by C.G. Conn for over 27 years as a key buffer. He also worked at W.T. Armstrong and retired from Blessings in 1996.
He was a member of the American Legion and also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Claus was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, his brother, Roland; and grandson, Joshua Ehlers, in 2001.
