Elton at first was a laborer at Washington, Vermont, but later was head attendant on a ward in the Hospital for the Insane at Middletown, Connecticut, and in a few years moved on to work at the Lunatic Hospital in Taunton, Massachusetts, where he died of typhoid fever. During his illness his cousin Alvyn Martin Smith (genealogist) was also living at Taunton, and helped take care of Elton.

Elton and his first wife, Carrie Bartlett (whom he married in Washington, VT on July 23, 1881), were divorced at Washington, VT. He had one known child by Carrie: Fred Leslie Burnham born Oct 20, 1881 in Washington, VT). He married, second to Julia Dooley on April 8, 1889 in Taunton, MA. He had no children by his second wife.

Abbie attended Barre (VT) Academy, and then taught school for two terms. She was a good amateur artist, painting many pictures, and a reader - she was fond of good books. She also loved flowers. But she was never very healthy. James’ jovial, obliging disposition made him first a good neighbor, and then husband for her.

Julia was the head nurse in a ward at the Hospital for the Insane at Middleton, Connecticut for several years, then at Taunton, Massachusetts, where her husband Elton died of typhoid fever.
