Sanford Hudson was born a son of Amos and Mary (Fisk) Hudson. His ancestors arrived in America in 1639. As a child, he moved with his family from to Jefferson County New York where Sanford was educated in the law profession and was admitted to the bar in 1848. He formed a partnership with another lawyer, John R. Bennett. He married Sarah Canfield (1821-1877) on October 13, 1847 in Sacket Harbor, New York. In the fall of 1848, Sanford and Sarah moved to Janesville Wisconsin where he continued to practice law. In 1857 he was appointed to serve out the remaining term of Mayor of Janesville when the then current mayor resigned from office. He was then elected the next term to keep that office. Afterwards he served as the first Police Justice in Janesville, an office he held from 1859 until 1870. In the spring of 1881, he moved to Fargo North Dakota as he was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Territory of Dakota. He served until 1885. He lived the remaining portion of his life in Fargo. Sanford and Sarah had five children: Francis L. , Reverand Theodore C., Harriet J. and twins Sarah C. and Sanford Henry.
