Orson Bromley Parrish was born Jan.11,1843 in Jackson Co., Michigan, the son of Orrin H. Parrish and Nancy Maria Keables Parrish.
The 1850 Federal Census finds the family living at Dowaiglao Station, Cass Co., Michigan. Orren H. a 35 yr. old laborer, wife Nancy, sons William O. and Orson B. 8 yrs. old, and daughter Mary E. age 3 .
The 1856 Iowa State Census finds them living in Lake Prairie Twsp., Marion Co., Ia. They had been residents in Iowa for one year having moved there in 1855 from Michigan. Oran H. 40 yr. old teamster by trade. Wife Nancy M. 36, sons William O. 17 and Orion P. 13 and daughter Mary E. 9.
In 1860 the family was living in Pella, Marion Co., Ia. Orin H. 45, Nancy M. 41, William O. 21, an engineer by trade, Orson P. 17y and Elizabeth M. 13.
Orson signed up as a 22 yr. old (or so he stated) on July 1,1861 at Columbus City, Louisa Co., Ia. into a company that would become Co. C, 5th Iowa Infantry. He accompanied them to Burlington, Iowa and went into bivouac there at Camp Warren. When the Co. was mustered for swearing into Federal service on July 16,1861 he was rejected by the mustering officer (most likely for being underage)He is listed in the 1863 Iowa Adjutant General's Report, Vol.1, page 183 as, "Brutin, O. Parish age 22, enlisted July 1,1861 and rejected by mustering officer July 16,1861".
Meanwhile Orson's father had made his way back to Michigan and enlisted in Co. C, 9th Michigan Infantry. He would die of typhoid fever in a hospital at Nashville, Tn. on Nov.24,1864.
Orson enlisted a second time as an additional enlistment on Nov.2,1861 and was successfully mustered into Co. B, 3rd Iowa Infantry on Nov.23,1861. His brother William O. Parrish also served in Co. B. (He is found in 1863 Iowa Adjutant General's Report, Vol. 1, page 96 as, "Parrish, Orson B. age 18, residence Pella, Marion Co., Ia. Born in Mich. as an additional enlistment on Nov.23,1861"). He would be mustered out Aug.15,1864 and transferred to Co. I, 2nd Iowa Infantry where he finished his term being mustered out for good on July 12,1865 at Louisville, Ky.
He married Miss Martha Anna McDougald on Oct.29,1868 at Norwich, Conn. A daughter, Fannie Luella, would be born March 22,1870 in Norwich, Conn. and another daughter born Jennie Elizabeth on Dec.31,1875 at Hartford, Conn.
The 1880 Federal Census finds the family living in New Haven, Conn. Orson B. 38 yr. old engineer by trade, Martha A. 40, Fannie L. 10 and Jennie E. 4 yrs.
On the 1890 Veteran's Schedule Orson was living at #50 Ringgold St., Springfield, Mass. and lists his service in Co. B, 3rd Iowa Inf. from Nov.13,1861 to Jan.3,1864.
He joined the Roswell Lodge AF&AM on Feb.9,1895 (being initiated), passed on March 16,1895 and raised on April 27,1895.
The Mass. Death Records lists his death on Sept.30,1899 at age 56y, 8m, and 19d. Cause of death is given as "suicide by shooting". Father is listed as Orrin H. Parrish and Mother as Nancy M. Keables. Born about 1843 in Jackson Co., Mich. He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Springfield.
Martha A. filed for a widow's pension on Dec.12,1899 with application # 709.976 but no pension certificate was ever issued.
