Howard Lewis Mendenhall, 69, of Martinstown, died unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, June 25, 1985. The son of Hershel Howard and Josie Adell (Wilcox) Mendenhall, he was born Dec. 10, 1915, in Schuyler County.

Howard was self-employed as a farmer, trucker, and sawmill operator. He was a life long resident of Putnam County. He served with the 370th Air Service Group of the United States Army. Among the medals he earned were four Bronze Stars and five Overseas Bars, Campaign Ribbon and Lapel Button. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Unionville chapter.

Survivors include: two brothers, Paul Mendenhall of Worthington and Orval Mendenhall of Swan, IA; four sisters, Lola Haines of Unionville, Ivalee Williams of Sapulpa, OK, Mary Leonard of Fairbury, NE, and Wilma Stewart of Hartford, IA. Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Estle Mendenhall.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, June 28, 1985, at the Broadlawns Funeral Home in Unionville with the Rev. Don Rowland officiating. Interment was in the Lone Pine Cemetery at Martinstown with military rites at the graveside. Pallbearers were: Mike Williams, Jon Williams, Gary Griggs, Dean Haines, Eugene Mendenhall, and Martie Mendenhall.
