Ernestine Lowe Fenner passed away Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, in Olney, Md.

Born Dec. 7, 1927, in Mountain City, Tenn., Mrs. Fenner resided for 49 years in Harrisonburg, Va., most recently at Sunnyside Retirement Community, before moving to Maryland in the spring to live with family.

Mrs. Fenner is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael L. and Melissa S. Fenner of Olney, Md.; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl F. and Robert Brown of Oakland, Calif.; four grandchildren, Reade, Thomas and Andrew Fenner and Elizabeth Brown; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Dewey Lilford Fenner.

After graduating from Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., Mrs. Fenner taught music at Unaka Elementary and High School. She transitioned into a career in social work and worked as claims examiner and social insurance field representative for the U.S. Social Security Administration for several years in eastern Tennessee. She went on to earn a master's degree in accounting at James Madison University, where she also taught accounting and finance. A certified public accountant, Mrs. Fenner also served as an auditor in the internal audit department and later as the controller for Dining Services at James Madison until her retirement.

She had a passion for daylilies, cross stitching, and her grandchildren, and will be remembered fondly by her many friends in the Shenandoah Valley.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 24, at 1 p.m. in the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel located at 3173 Spotswood Trail in Harrisonburg, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Olney Home for Life, a nonprofit organization consisting of local volunteers who are dedicated to providing transportation to seniors seeking medical treatment in Montgomery County, Md.
