Civil War Veteran.
Alexander was a son of Levi and Hester Countryman Carney, residents of the Neversink area of NY. He was a Carpenter prior to his enlistment in the Army. He was enrolled September 3, 1861 as a Private in Capt Conklin's Cavalry CO D Of the 56th Regiment NY volunteers. Conklin's CO D designation was subsequently changed to 1st NY Mtd. Rifles 4th NY Provisional Cav. Co. "C". He was transferred from 1st Cav. February 6, 1862 and assigned to Co. "K" 56th NY Infantry Regiment. Discharged from service at Yorktown, VA.,on October 3, 1862, due to Chronic disability. Was enlisted as a substitute for John Corgil of Neversink, NY. December 10, 1863. Physical description given as having Grey eyes, light hair, florid complexion, 5' 11.5 ". Assigned to Co. "I" 54th Regiment NY Volunteer Infantry. Entered as Private and was promoted to Corp. Numerous Diary entries for sick at Camp and sick at Post Hospital at Orangeburg, SC. Medical records show he was treated for Typhoid and Malaria from September 25,1865 to January 1, 1866. Discharged from service January 1, 1866. Married January 2, 1868 at Liberty, NY., to Sarah A. Delamarter, daughter of John Isaac and Catharine B. Harp Delamarter. Matthew applied for and received a pension for his war service based upon his being disabled and unable to work. In March of 1899 in an affidavit Matthew stated that he had not seen his wife (Sarah) in 26 years. He stated that she left him and that it was later reported to him that she had died. At some later point he remarried and he stated that he had not seen her in 12 years and that she had went living with another man. He did not identify this wife by name nor did he indicate that he had children with her. At this point in time he had been living in McKean County, PA since at least Nov. 1891. He resided at various places in McKean County where his health began to worsen and eventually he was incarcerated in the State Hospital for the Insane, Conewango Twp., Warren County, PA where he remained until his death from exhaustion of Senile Dementia. His death certificate was made out under the name Matthew O'Carney and states his body was released to the State Anatomical Board.
