A man of great many talents and accomplishments, from arctic exploration to artistry, architecture and engineering, he was probably most famous as an expert at "cutaway drawings", telescope making, buildings and machine design. His techniques and success at illustrating on paper the inner 3-D appearance and workings of complex mechanical devices and structures in perspective was of great utility in many fields of design and construction. Some of his greatest accomplishments were his contributions to the creation of the 200-inch and 48-inch Mt. Palomar telescopes, the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, several buildings at the California Institute of Technology, military hardware for the WW2 war effort, and Stellafane, one of the original amateur telescope making organizations.
