In 1896 George, Emelie and their three young children (Otto George Robert, b. 1892, Helen Anna, b. 1894, and Erwin George, b. 1896) emigrated to Minnesota, where George's older brothers Emil and Robert were already living. Another child, Martha Emelie, was born in 1898 in Blue Earth, Minnesota, and the entire family became U.S. citizens in 1913.
Trained as a wheelwright in Germany, George put his expert woodworking skills to other uses as his craft became obsolete. He was soon in demand as a skilled carpenter as far away as Minneapolis, crafting such intricate things as circular stairways. In his retirement, he and Emelie (whose name was often spelled Amelia to better suit American pronunciation) moved to Fairmont, Martin County, Minnesota.
Soon after they moved there, their daughter Helen and her two children Tom (b. 1919) and Betty (b. 1924) moved in with them after Helen's second husband abandoned the family in 1931. Helen, who was devastated, became ill and died on December 1. She was buried in Lakeside Cemetery on her father's 65th birthday, December 4. George and Emelie then raised Tom and Betty for several years, refusing to let the children be apprehended as "orphans." Tom and Betty moved in with their birth father (Helen's first husband) and his new wife in Iowa in 1934, but remained very close to their grandparents.
George died on 17 February 1944 of a coronary thrombosis. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery was on 18 February 1944.
