James Robert "Bob" Helms was the son of Elias Henry and Effie Dicey Castleberry Helms. He was the oldest of four children. He served in the U.S. Navy on board the U.S.S. Kaskaskia as Storekeeper 3rd Class, from 1948-1952. He married Bobbie Lois Faught in 1954 in Auburndale, Florida. He is the father of 3 children, grandfather of 5, and great grandfather of one.
