Anna J. Weintz was born August 11, 1868 at Appleton, Wisc., and passed away on June 4, 1956 in the Sheldon hospital, the result of a bad fall from her porch at her home.
She was the oldest daughter of Phillip H. and Bertha Weintz and one of seven children. With her family, she moved to Cherokee, Iowa in 1872. She attended Buena Vista College and Highland Park College at Des Moines. In 1891, she accepted a position in the Sanborn Public School as the primary teacher which she held until her marriage.
On August 3, 1897, she was united in marriage with W.H. Barker of Sanborn and to this union were born a daughter, Helen, and a son, William E.
Soon after coming to Sanborn, Mrs. Barker united with the Prebyterian Church, where she was a active member in the Sunday School and church work, holding a number of official positions.
Mr. Barker was one of the early business men of Sanborn and for a number of years she helped him with his business.
Later she was most active in church work which she continued as long as her health permitted. The last few years she had been in frail health but always cheerful, never complaining. Her life was a source of courage to others. To know her was to love her.
She was preceded in death by her husband six months before; also by one sister, Mrs. John G. Brass of London, England.
To cherish her memory she leaves her daughter, Miss Helen Barker of New York City, N.Y.; her son William E. Barker, of Sanborn, and two brothers, George D. Weintz and Henry C. Weintz of Sioux City, Ia.; three sisters, Miss Hulda Weintz and Miss Caroline Weintz of Sioux City, and Mrs. Emma Pickens of Sapulpa, Okla. Also three grandchildren, William C., Jean Ann and Carol Barker.
Services were conducted on Sunday June 7, by Dr. C.G. Butler and Rev. Dean Williams at 2 o'clock at the First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. James Wilson rendered two selections, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "He Leadeth Me", accompanied by Mrs. Earl Mayne.
Pallbearers were George Foote, Jay Lowery, Earl Mayne, Kenneth Tifft, John Hofman, and Joh Delan.
Interment was in Roseland Cemetery beside her husband.
Out of town relatives and friends here for the services were Miss Helen Barker of New York City, Miss Carrie Weintz and George D. Weintz of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bruns of George, IA, and Victor Peck of Primghar, IA.
