At the young age of 18, Orval joined Company "C" of the 2nd Regiment of the Oregon Volunteer Regiment. He was promptly sent to the Philippine Islands for the Philippine Insurrection campaign, where he was promoted to Corporal. In 1905 he joined the 19th United States Infantry and served two enlistments. In 1915 he joined the United States Marine Corps at Portland, Oregon and was inducted at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA. In 1938 he retired from the Marine Corps as a Master Gunnery Sgt. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection and World War I. For his service he was awarded the Spanish War Campaign medal, the Philippine Insurrection Campaign medal, the Marine Corps. Good Conduct medal with four reelistment bars, the Marine Corps. Expeditionary medal, the Yangtze Service medal, the 2nd Nicaraguan Campaign medal, the Marine Corps. Mexican Service medal, the World War I Victory medal, the Dominican Republic Campaign medal, the Expert Riflelman's Badge and the Expert Pistol Badge.
