Daughter of John Kelman and Ellen Kelman, both of Scotland.

Married Chinese-born American John David Hayes on July 6, 1916 in Scotland.

She did mission work with women and with the children of missionaries as well as raising five children of her own. The Hayes were on furlough from 1923-24 and from 1936-37 when her husband studied in London and at New York and Yale. In 1941, she and her two youngest children were sent to the Philippines, then repatriated to America in 1943. Her husband was interned in Weihsien with his aging parents.

Mother of Margaret Irene Hayes (b. New York City) and Elinor Bell Hayes (b. China).

After her husband's death, she traveled throughout America speaking on behalf of the mission until her retirement in 1959 in New York.
