Mathew was the only son of poet/novelist Paul Goodman and his common-law wife, Sally. He had a sister, Daisy, and a half-sister, Susan, from Paul's first wife Virginia Miller.
Mathew attended the Bronx High School of Science in New York City, Class of 1963. He was very close with his father, participating with him in the draft and war protests in the 60's.
He attended Cornell University where he was a senior when he died in a fall while climbing North Percy Peak in Stratford, New Hampshire. He was 20 years old. Paul Goodman was devastated by his son's death. His health deteriorated and he died five years later.
Mathew is buried here between his father and his Aunt Alice Goodman, who was Paul's older sister.
