ANDREW JACKSON BEALL
THE FIRST SETTLER

It would be impossible to tell the story of Gumpond without telling the story of the Beall family. Andrew Jackson Beall, the father of the Bealls in this area, was born somewhere in South Carolina on March 6, 1825.

In about 1840, he and a brother named Marion came to what is now Pearl River County. Andrew liked this area and decided to settle here. Marion became restless and moved to Texas. Family legend says Marion got into a quarrel in a saloon in Texas, killed a man in a knife fight, and was never heard of again.

Andrew married Elizabeth Blair, who was born in August , 1823, and they settled on Wolf Creek, below what was later to become Hillsdale. A short time later they moved from Wolf Creek to about two miles south of the present Gumpond Baptist Church on the Gumpond road, (about 150 yards north and a little west of my home). As far as can be determined, Andrew and Elizabeth were the first white people to settle in the Gumpond area. Andrew and Elizabeth built a home and later the first school in this community. It was here they raised their family of eight children; Agustus Beall, born February 14,1845; George F. M. Beall, born April 25,1847; Thomas Beall, born August 18, 1856; Joe Beall, born 1868; and four girls, Kate, Arsiner, Alice and Rose. Andrew died March 12,1898, and Elizabeth lived until January 29, 1903.
