He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy near Hoengsong, South Korea on February 12, 1951. He was held at "Mining Camp" and died on August 31, 1951 of starvation and lack of medical treatment. Sergeant Kreider was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
