CANEY — Edward L. Fleming, 85, formerly of Salina and Altamont, passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at the Guest Home Estates in Caney, where he had lived the past three years.

He was born July 20, 1928, in Ellsworth County to Hazen and Edith (Bailey) Fleming. He grew up in rural Kanopolis.

Edward married Norma Jean Mantz in Kanopolis on Aug. 23, 1952. Following their marriage, he graduated from Kansas State University in 1954 and served two years as second lieutenant in the Army. He then worked as a soil scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 30 years. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Salina and the Lions Club.

Edward is survived by daughters, Connie Veteto and her husband, Mike, of Bartlesville, Okla., Jeanine Cooper and her husband, Kenneth, of rural Edna, and Suzann Fleming and her husband, Marty Heaton, of Salina; a son, Gary Fleming and his wife, Kerri, of Bartlesville, Okla.; seven grandchildren; a brother, Bill Fleming of Ellsworth; and sisters, Dorothy Lacey of Salina and Mary Alice Craven of Hays.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma; and a brother, David.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth. A private family inurnment will be at a later date.
