Shot and killed by son in law Buck Stafford. Quote from Springfield Republican (Sep 1902 ?)
"Stafford and his wife had been separated for over a year. Sunday evening Swearengin and his daughter went to the home of Stafford for some goods which Swearengin claimed belonged to his daughter. A quarrel ensued. Swearengin
raised a gun and was in the act of shooting Stafford, when his daughter [Minnie] took the gun from his hands. Just as she saved her husband's life Stafford pulled his gun and shot Swearengin in the breast near the heart. He died within 24 hours. Stafford is still at large and it is thought that he is at the house of an older brother."
