At seven years of age, Jack's father was struck with a form of intestinal cancer. His father attempted to seek help at a Los Angeles treatment center, but after arriving was not given much hope. A treatment program was started but his situation worsened. Notified of his impending death, his mother Bessie took both kids to Los Angelos but his father succumbed to the disease before they arrived.
Despite their tragedy, California left an impression. Once Jack graduated high school, the whole family relocated to California where they remained the rest of their lives.
