LUTHER E. BRITT - Services for the one of Henderson County's war dead to be repatriated were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Union Grove Church for Luther E. Britt, who was 27 years old at the time of his death. The Rev. Walter Moody was in charge of services at which military services were carried out. Pfc. Britt died October 2, 1943, of injuries received in a motor vehicle accident at Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. He was originally interred in the U. S. Military Cemetery, Schofield Barracks.
The body arrived in Lexington Monday afternoon aboard the City of Memphis with S-Sgt. Raymond B. Gray as escort from the Memphis General Depot. The body had arrived in San Francisco earlier aboard the U. S. S. Honda Knot in the first shipment of bodies from the Pacific.
Pfc. Britt entered the Army during the first year of the draft. He was a member of the 97 Coast Artillery Battalion at the time of his death. A firing squad for the Lexington National Guard Company fired a salute at the grave. Pallbearers were Silas Garner, Jerry Watkins, Mack Taylor, Dennis Douglas, Howard Williams, Joe W. Azbill, T. M. Taylor, Charles Hendrix and Elus Gurley. Pafford Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
