Isaac H Howell was born 8 May 1839 in Spencer, Tioga County, New York to Jonathan and Almira Case Howell, the 2nd oldest of 10 children. He was educated in Spencer and worked the family farm alongside his father. The Civil War broke out in 1861 and his younger brother, 19 year old John Dean Howell enlisted in service of the Union Army. John returned to his home in May 1863, wounded, but alive. Seven months later on December 14, 1863, Isaac Howell enlisted at Elmira, NY, for service in the 14th NY Heavy Artillery as a Private. A log of his service follows:

January 17, 1864, Company M was assigned to the 6th New York Volunteer Artillery Company and was then deployed to Fort Richmond Harbor until April 1864.

In February of 1865 Isaac contracted Typhoid Fever while on prison guard duty in the cold and rain at Dinwiddie, Virginia, just outside of Petersburg, VA. He was admitted to Brigade Hospital at City Point, Virginia, March 1, 1865, and then transferred to Armory Square Hospital in Washington, DC in the Spring of 1865.

He was mustered out August 26, 1865 at Washington as a Corporal and returned home to the family farm in Spencer, NY.

Eight months after his return, on 22 April 1866, Isaac married Harriet Alice Van Buskirk at Elmira, NY, their vows were witnessed by Celia Valerint. Isaac and Harriet raised their 7 children in Chemung County a stone's throw from his birth home of Spencer, NY. Isaac died at the young age of 44 leaving his 37 year old widow to care for their children who ranged in age from 1 to 16. Isaac was buried in Dry Brook Cemetery, there in Chemung County.

Harriett lived in widowhood for the following 20 years and never remarried. She died in 1904 and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Waverly, New York.
