Mother: Sarah James
Spouse: Elizabeth Lewis
John D. Davis was born with the name John Davies in 1839 in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales to Steven Davies and Sarah James. When he was 21 years old, John married 18 year old Elizabeth Lewis in Merthyr Tydfil. They had three sons and a daughter while living in Wales and 6 sons and another daughter after they moved to the United States for a total of 11 children, 9 boys and two girls. Their sixth son, William Alfred, lived for less than a year. John moved to the United States once, then returned to his family in Wales, after which he again went to America , where his family eventually joined him. After living in Pennsylvania for several years, the family made its way to Preston, Idaho, where John and Elizabeth stayed for the rest of their lives.
John D. Davis worked in the iron mills in Wales and the coal mines in Pennsylvania, and he and his family raised livestock when they moved to Idaho. When he lived in Pennsylvania, his name became an issue at work and in store accounts, so the bookkeeper for Filer and Lucy Co. changed John Davies' name to John D. Davis, and John never changed it back. In fact, his whole family took on the name Davis instead of Davies.
John's wife and children all joined the church before him. He was baptized on 27 May 1893 in Preston. He died on 20 February 1912 and was buried in the Preston City Cemetery on the 24th January 1912.
