Michael A. Rosso, Jr. enlisted on July 28, 1942 at Providence, RI, from his residence in Westerly, Washington Co., RI. His serial number was 31172328. His enlistment papers indicate that he had grammar schooling and his pre-War occupation field was 'electricians apprentice'. He was single. He later joined the 455th AAA Bn., Battery 'C' Headquarters. The 455th AAA trained at Camp Stewart and Ft. Benning, Ga., then went overseas to Norfolk, England in Sept. 1943. Rosso's Battery 'C' guarded a B-24 repair airbase at Watton, Norfolk, England. Michael Rosso was in the Gun Maintenance Section of "C' headquarters, as an Artillery Mechanic..His rank was T/4 (Sgt.).. In July 1944, the unit went to France for 'Operation Cobra' as part of Patton's 3rd Army, Walker's XX Corps. They later went into Germany and Austria and returned home in October 1945. The unit shotdown/damaged over 130 German aircraft and became the second highest-scoring antiaircraft unit in Patton's 3rd Army.
NOTE: A veteran of the 455th AAA Bn. made the following comment about Rosso at a reunion:
Opal Pleasant, Battery ‘C', gun crew #1: "T/4 Michael A. Rosso in our Gun Maintenance section was a pro boxer. He would never box with the guys. He later revealed that he had killed a man in the ring…"
Michael passed away in Washington Co., RI in 1974 (age 66).
