Youngest son of Walter H. and Nettie (Patterson) Gibbs, Emile was single and living at 3307 E. Marshall Street in Richmond on 05 Jun 1917 when he registered for the WWI draft. At the time, he was listed as a commercial artist, working for the Ceasar Advertising Agency in that town.

Sometime shortly afterwards, he had changed occupations and was working as a conductor for the Virginia Rail and Power Company, but remained at the same address.

At the end of July, he went to Ocean View to spend a day at the beach, and disappeared. Having rented a locker and changed at the beach, his absence was reported and a search for him began. He was found several days later, the official cause of his death was listed as accidental drowning.
