James William Barnhill Jr., 84, of Medford, Ore., passed away August 17, 2013 at home. He was born in Owensboro, Ky., September 18, 1928, to Sarah Kimbley Barnhill and James W. Barnhill Sr.

At the beginning of WWII, the family relocated to the west coast, eventually settling in Reno, Nev., where James

completed high school. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1945, serving in the Pacific theater. Upon release from the Navy, he attended University of Nevada, Reno, then Woodbury University in Los Angeles, Calif., where he graduated with a B.A. degree in business. While at Woodbury, James met his future wife, Louise Bates. They were married June 1, 1951, in Reno, and were married 61 years until her death in December 2012. Life without his beloved Louise ("LuLu") was difficult for Jim, but he found comfort in the company of his daughter

Carolyn.

James sold advertising for newspapers in Reno, Nev., Sacramento, Calif., and for many years in Santa Barbara, Calif. While working in Santa Barbara, James also completed a degree in psychology at UC Santa Barbara. James retired in 1989 and the family moved to Medford, Ore. He was an avid reader, talented artist, and enjoyed gardening and traveling (especially to the Oregon coast).

James is survived by his daughter, Carolyn; brother, Hugh (Barbara) Barnhill; sister, Ann (Robert) Maro; and many

nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Jim's compassionate caregivers, Linda Mack and Angie Wherley, and the Providence Hospice team. The Eagle Point National Cemetery will be the final resting place for Jim and Louise. A private family service is planned for a later date
