Katharine Graham was born in 1893 in Oregon City, Oregon. She was the granddaughter of Joseph Hamilton Lambert, prominent Oregon pioneer and orchardist, and daughter of Capt. A. B. Graham, a well-known river pilot who established a steamboat and tugboat service. She graduated from St. Helens Hall (now Oregon Episcopal School) and later married Lt. Cdr Daniel E. Barbey in Portland on June 16, 1927 in Portland. Her husband went on to become a prominent and decorated Admiral in the U.S. Navy who made significant contributions to the success of U.S. campaigns in the South Pacific in WWII. The couple lived in several different countries all over the world, but made frequent trips back to Portland, which they considered their home. Upon Admiral Barbey's retirement from the Navy in 1951, the couple moved to Olympia, Washington where Mrs. Barbey was active in several civic organizations.
