Mr. Larry Garrett, 61, of Newnan, Ga., died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003 at Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta. He was born in Coweta County on July 13, 1942 to the late Herbert Jackson Garrett and the late Myrtle Hancock Garrett.

Mr. Garrett grew up in Coweta County always wanting to be in law enforcement. He was mentored and encouraged to follow his dream by the late Sheriff Aaron Massey. He and his brother both chose law enforcement as their professions. His brother, Tony Jackson Garrett, was killed in the line of duty while a deputy sheriff in Carroll County. Larry was Coweta County's first juvenile officer. He began his career with the Coweta Police Office in the 1960s. He was an officer with the City of Fairburn from August 1973 until June 1991. He went back to work for the Coweta County Sheriff's Office in 1992 as a patrol officer and was a deputy in the Court Services division at his death.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Yates, Rev. Terry Phillips and Sheriff Mike Yeager will officiate. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Coweta County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers, and fellow law enforcement officers will be honorary pallbearers.

The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Angel's House Children's Shelter, P.O. Box 657, Newnan, GA 30264 or to the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Home, P.O. Box 1000, Stockbridge, GA 30281.

Surviving are his wife, Pam Garrett of Newnan; sister and brother-in-law, Sue and James Windom of Newnan; daughter, Janya Garrett Miles of Newnan; daughter and son-in-law, Shelly and Bob Johnston of Acworth; son, Randy Garrett of Cumming; son and daughter-in-law, James and Kristen Thompson of Chicago, IL; niece, Kim Coggins and her husband Mitch; nephew, Tony Garrett and 11 grandchildren.
