New Hampshire Governor, Politician, Colonial Soldier. Born in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, he was noted for being the seventeenth and nineteenth Governor of New Hampshire, plus the father of the 14th United States President Franklin Pierce. During the Revolutionary War, he served under General George Washington and participated in the Battle of Bunker Hill. After the war, he organized the New Hampshire Militia and served as Brigadier General in 1805. He was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives (1789-02), member of the Governor's Executive Council, (1803-09, 1814) and served as the Hillsborough County Sheriff, (1809-12, (1818-27). In 1827, he was a Democratic-Republican elected as the seventeenth Governor of New Hampshire, serving until 1828 and was reelected the nineteenth Governor of New Hampshire, serving (1829-30) and after his term, he retired from political life. He died at age 81 in Hillsboro, New Hampshire.
